Questions about COVID-19 cleaning protocols as well as disinfectant & sanitization products.
What is electrostatic spraying?
Traditional janitorial services are a first step toward keeping your work spaces clean, but they are not fully effective at killing germs, viruses, and other pathogens.
Electrostatic spraying uses a touchless application sprayer to apply a cationic disinfectant solution in an atomized fog or fine mist.
The spray nozzle applies an electric charge to the solution, causing a positive attraction between the spray droplets and surrounding surfaces. This definitive attraction assures a more evenly distributed disinfectant application, even in areas where germs and bacteria can settle out of reach and out of sight.
What are the benefits of electrostatic spraying?
Evenly distributed application allows for required disinfectant dwell times
Complete application coverage of all exposed surfaces
Through product vaporization, airborne and surface-based pathogens are destroyed so there is no need to move furniture or equipment around for the treatment to work
Reduces the risk of cross contamination often caused by traditional wet- and dry-wiping
Cationic charge of solution prevents dripping
Uses on average 65% less chemical product per square foot than other techniques (making it an eco-friendly service option)
Electrostatic spraying is probably the quickest and easiest way to disinfect large areas with minimum disruption to both you and your business
How does electrostatic spraying differ from standard fogging?
Standard fogging cleaners are similar to the touchless application technique of electrostatic spraying but are different in two ways.
First, standard fogging utilizes nearly the same technology but does not apply an electric charge to the cleaning molecules when they exit the applicator, so does not provide the same benefits as electrostatic spraying. Second, fogging cleaners use larger particle sizes compared to the electrostatic spraying process, which may lead to dripping and require additional cleanup.
What disinfectant is used?
Vital Oxide has been approved by the EPA for use against SARS-COV-2, the corona virus that causes the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Additionally, it is an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant cleaner, mold & mildew killer, and odor eliminator. This product is non-irritating to skin, non-corrosive to most treated articles, NSF-certified (no rinse required) for food-contact surfaces, and listed as a category IV (lowest toxicity category) pesticide with the EPA.
Its ready-to-use formula is designed to be gentle to users but tough on germs.
Is Vital Oxide “green”?
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently reviewing the way third parties will be able to carry “green” claims on all disinfectants. EPA policy does not currently allow “green” claims to be placed directly on any disinfectant product’s label.
While Vital Oxide is mild on skin, hard surfaces, and fabric, and will certainly qualify for “green status” when the designation is allowed, we cannot advertise this claim until it is permitted by the EPA. Vital Oxide is also a powerful disinfectant able to kill some of the toughest and most resistant forms of bacteria and mold. The chemical composition of Vital Oxide is such that it has a minimal impact on the environment and contains no ozone harming volatile compounds (VOC).
How effective is this process?
While traditional cleaning is a key part of keeping bacteria and viruses at bay, electrostatic spraying is proven to be more effective for destroying airborne pathogens, disinfecting large areas quickly, and ensuring more thorough disinfection of areas that may get missed or are out of reach for traditional methods.
What preparation is required prior to spraying?
We recommend turning off all electronics, set lights and distro; house lights work fine for our purposes. Foods such as fruits or vegetables should be removed or covered.
Camera department may elect to cover their cameras and lenses as our fog does leave a fine but safe residue. Mirrors in the make-up room or bathroom may also retain a fine residue on the glass.
Turn off air conditioning and circulation fans during application to allow the fog to fully fill the space.
Will our motion picture equipment be safe?
Because our spraying systems are water based, it’s highly recommended to power down all electronics prior to spraying.
Our technicians are trained to be extra cautious around motion picture equipment; however, production may elect to cover high-value and sensitive electronics such as cameras, sound mixers, dimmer racks, and computers prior to application.
How long does the spraying process take?
Depending on the density of your furniture, set flats, equipment, and adjacent rooms or offices, most stages under 10,000 square feet can be disinfected within an hour or two.
If spraying has to be done during your dinner break, we often send two technicians to expedite the process. Your crew can return to set within fifteen minutes of the application.
